What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up
I’ve been a mentor on Owala’s Ask An Expert forum for a little over half a year and I love it! Explaining some of the core science concepts to these elementary school students reminded me how much I loved science when I was younger and why I got into this field. Every once in a while, I even get stumped by the questions and need to go do some research to find the answer!
I just love the level of enthusiasm and excitement that I hear from the kids and parents on the forum. I remember doing some of these experiments myself when I was in high-school and that must have been my favorite time in school.
The other day, one student asked me what I was planning on doing after graduating. I asked him how old he was, and he told me he was 8. Isn’t that a little young to worry about post-college careers?! 🙂 He told me he once saw a TV show where a medical robot was actually operating on a patient. Ever since then, he’s been wanting to design medical robots when he grows up. I felt that his dream is so much bigger and more specific than any I had when I myself was 8 years old. The blazingly fast advance of science and technology makes it possible to inspire our kids to dream ever bigger. All of us, as parents, educators, scientists and technologists ought to work together to help our kids to fulfill these incredible aspirations.
